Antique Georgian Sampler Pair, SMALL Size, Lions, Leopards and Rabbits Initials:

We are delighted to offer this rare pair of small size samplers. They are an exact pair, the birds face each other. They are in their original pearwood Hogarth frames and behind old bubbled glass. It is amazing to think that this pair have remained together for 220 plus years - we would prefer not to separate them.
Although both initialed E.H, the pair are not dated. When we study the wonderfully imaginative motifs, we would date this pair to the 1800-1810 period. As well as Lions with blue legs, we see two spotty Leopards , a beautiful finch bird sat a top each fruiting tree in the vase. We also see a royal crown, Tulip flowers in the top vases and our favorite motif is the teeny rabbits at the base of each central vase!! All worked in cross stitch silk thread upon an undyed Tabby/ plain weave ground.

Size: Framed 11 3/4 inch tall (29.5 cm) by 9 1/8 inch wide (23.3 cm). Visible sampler approx 9 1/2 inch by 7 inch (24 cm x 18 cm).
Condition: This is a genuine George III period pair, in their original frames. They do show age. The frames have a good original dry patina with some rubbing to the surface and knocks to the very corners. The samplers have darkened with age. The silk thread stitches are sound but have faded with age/light. There is one tiny hole in the Lion sampler to the central tip of the right side top Tulip.
