Antique English MALLET / Squat Cylinder Black Glass Pontil Utility Bottle:
$525.00

Up for sale is a jaw dropping full size English mallet or early squat cylinder wine/liquor/rum aka generic utility bottle dating to the mid 18th century - I would say squarely between 1740 and 1750. It's free blown with no mold seams. It's a very deep olive-amber / black glass color. It has a heavy applied string rim/bladed collar just below the plain slightly flared lip and a slightly kicked-up base with a wide sand pontil scar. It's about 8 1/8" tall and it's a bit less than in 4 1/2" diameter. It's got a really appealing late mallet/transitional squat cylinder proportion with its wide body, nice straight sides, sharp shoulder, and squat narrow neck. You can see the evolution of the shape and similarvarieties pictured and described on p. 80 in Willy van den Bossche's vital book "Antique Glass Bottles: Their History and Evolution (1500-1850)".
It's in outstanding condition, with just a few small shallow chips or nicks along the lower edge of the bladed collar and a nick at the upper edge of the lip. The upper lip roughness connects to a short open bubble in the neck so it may be as made there. It is plainly a seafloor/shipwreck recovery, showing tons of patina and character from spending a couple centuries underwater... There is moderate etching/shallow superficial losses to the surface, in the form of shallow circumferential scuffed lines - honest exterior wear and dullness all over, but retaining some of its original surface gloss in other areas. I suspect some of the less geometric lines to the surface are perhaps from shipworm or some other rough crustacean. Otherwise just some internal residue and dried gunk, plus a harmlessopen bubble to the interior of the body. I've pictured it next to some other early European blackglass to illustrate the variety of forms I have for sale - this listing is for just the single bottle, not the group.
Satisfaction guaranteed, if you're not in love after handling it in person I'm happy to accept returns. Shipped via USPS Priority Mail at buyer's expense, or pickup in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Please visit my 'store' as I always have dozens of other bottles, flasks etc for sale - if you see something else you like, let me know and we can work out a deal and combine shipping!
