Antique Early Faience Beer Stein Walzenkrug Schrezheim Factory Floral c.1790s

Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the early 1800s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim. Founded in 1752, the Schrezheim factory, near Ellwagen in southern Germany, produced many beautiful beer steins until it was closed in 1865.

The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim reddish clay and glazed with white tin glaze. The shape of the stein is called "Walzenkrug" in Germany - "the cylindrical stein".

The stein was painted by one of the factory decorators, who created a picture of a beautiful floral bouquet - a very common subject for faience decoration.

The stein has great pewter mounts - Schrezheim was famous for their pewter. It consists of an ornate lid with an elegant ball-shape thumblift and a foot ring.

The lid features large 5-ring closed type hinge and an hollow thumblift common for the late 1700s - early 1800s.

It is engraved with the original owner initials and number 25 - this is the tavern number - people in old Germany used to keep personal beer steins in their favorite tavern. The patron's stein were kept on a shelf upside down so the lid was hanging from it. The number were often engraved on the lids for a fast recognition. This habit is still present in Munich and other Bavarian cities.

The stein is in a great condition - there are no cracks and no chips, no glaze flakes, the pewter is in perfect order.

This is a perfect condition for an early faience piece.

Please note - the mark you see on the picture with open lid is not a repair - it's a canvas mark resulted in the original method of putting the lid. This spot was pressed with a wet canvas piece to prevent lid from melting when applying the thumblift.

Thstein is large and impressive, standing 9.5" tall to the top of the thumblift, 1 L capacity.

Condition: Excellent Year:  1790s Country: Germany Height: 9.5 in   Materials: Faience
