RARE ANTIQUE CHALKWARE NATIVE AMERICAN
INDIAN CIGAR STORE BUST CIRCA 1907

Available for purchase is a RARE antique chalkware (plaster) cigar store Native American Indian bust. These busts were commonly used as countertop display pieces at cigar and tobacco stores during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This particular bust was made circa 1907 by L. Pellegrini & Company, a statuary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It depicts a Native American Indian chief wearing a necklace of bear claws and tassels. I\'m not sure who the bust is intended to represent, but it\'s likely Pellegrini\'s version of Hiawatha, a popular likeness depicted on cigar store busts during that time period. Hiawatha was a precolonial Native American leader and cofounder of the Iroquois Confederacy. His character became a household name during the 19th century following the release of the epic poem \"The Song of Hiawatha\" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1855.The bust stands about 16 1/4\" tall and measures approximately 11 1/2\" wide. It\'s beautifully painted with polychrome decoration. There are two holes on top, possibly for the insertion of feathers, if desired. The left side of the base is marked \"Copyright by L. Pellegrini 1907 Phila. Pa.\".I purchased this bust at a recent estate sale. It is guaranteed to be an original antique chalkware bust and NOT a modern reproduction. Please check out my positive response and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.Chalkware busts by L. Pellegrini and Company appear to be quite scarce. The statuary was founded by Louis Pellegrini (1866-1941) in Philadelphia following his emigration from Italy into the United States during the 1880s. The company seemed to specialize mostly in religious statuary. I\'ve been unable to find another single example of this Pellegrini bust pictured anywhere online.Condition of this antique chalkware bust is EXCELLENT. The paint looks great, most likely touched up in a few places. There are a few minor nicks to the plaster that were touched up. The top of the head has 2 small holes (see photo), possibly intended to insert feathers for additional decoration. Overall, this chalkware Native American Indian bust looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It was obviously well cared for. Please take a close look at the many photos I\'ve provided and judge condition for yourself. I\'m confident you\'ll be very pleasedwith this purchase. If you collect Native American Indian items or tobacco store memorabilia, don\'t miss your opportunity to purchase this offering. As I mentioned earlier, this bust appears to be VERY RARE with no other examples pictured online. You may never see another one. My Buy It Now price of only $449 is a bargain for this scarce bust. So, buy it now before someone else beats you to the deal! While you\'re here, please check out my other listings by clicking on the link below.
