THE PELLETIER CO.
Department Store
With the exception of a short period in 1905, the Pelletier store had served Sioux City and the territory for 42 years (1896-1938?). Its service was temporarily interrupted in January, 1905, when several business blocks in Sioux City were razed to the ground by a disastrous fire. In October of that year it was re-established at the location on Pierce street. F. M. Pelletier was the founder and active head of the institution after watching it grow from a small dry goods house to a giant department store. The business grew so rapidly that another store was opened in Topeka, KS, in 1915, to give a stronger buying power in the world\'s markets. The company had unusually strong buying connections in New York and Paris.
Over 450 people were employed in the store in order to give service to the public. All lines that were handled by a department store in addition to such nationally known lines as Knabe and Kurtzman pianos, Cheney phonographs, Denyvale linens, Cantilever shoes, Phoenix hosiery, Fashion Park clothes and others were handled. Each department in this store was a store within the store. The home furnishing department itself covered over 61,000 square feet of floor space. In it was everything for the home from carpets and draperies to pianos and phonographs. G Felsenthal & Sons
Early in his career, Gabriel Felsenthal was a watchmaker, but this would eventually lead him to making jewelry, vanity cases and advertising novelties like celluloid buttons. His company, G. Felsenthal & Sons was established around 1896 in Chicago as a wholesale jewelry company. Soon after he left that company to his brother and started a new company in 1898 that specialized in advertising novelties. With his interest in cameras and his background in watch and jewelry making, he was able to use his skills and knowledge to specialize in the use of photographic images in his advertising novelties like buttons and vanity cases.
Beginning during World War II, the company was a major manufacturer of plastic calculating instruments used by the Army Air Forces and by the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics. This proved so successful that they became known as The Felsenthal Instrument Company and continued to make a variety of plastic items for commercial and technical purposes until 1976.
