Here we have an GENUINE original antique John Bull clock case made by Bradley & Hubbard. This is a genuine case NOT a reproduction. The case splits in two as shown in the photographs as would be expected with an original.

The clock case is made of cast iron and depicts the character John Bull but this is also sometime referred to as the Squire model.

The history behind the character John Bull is that he originated in John Arbuthnor\'s \'History of John Bull\'. In this JohnBull is an imaginary figure who is a personification of England, similar to the American \'Uncle Sam\'. He is shown in cartoons and caricatures as a prosperous farmer of the 18th century.JohnBull first appears as a character in a series of political satires byJohn Arbuthnot(1667-1735).John Bull became widely known from his use in cartoons that were published in the British weekly magazine of humour and satire, Punch.

The case shows John Bull dressed in a black dinner suit complete with a matching bow tie and top hat. Although this sale is for the case only where the hole is located, he would be holding a clock with his hands embedded in his belly.

The blue eyes are also made of porcelain and are supposed to move in sync with the clock.

As can be seen from the photograph, the underside of the clock is marked with \"BRADLEY & HUBBARD PATENTED JULY 14, 1857.\"

As can be seen from the photographs this is nicely detailed.

The clock measures approximately : 8 inches / 20.5 cm wide x 5 1/4 inches / 13.5 cm deep x 15 3/4 inches / 40 cm high. The opening for the movement / dial is approximately 3 1/8 inches / 8 cm in diameter

CONDITION: This sale is for the case only. The case is in good condition just minor wear / chips to the paint commensurate with age and use. There are no cracks, breaks or dents. One of the screws is lacking. Please study photographs which are an integral part of the description as you will receive what is photographed.
