Up for sale is a great script-enameled early 1900s hand-blown back bar decanter / bottle.It\'s about a quart size, blown in clear glass with the slightest straw tint, and is interestingly patterned with a \"pillar optic\" effect, having a bit of a swirl to it too. The ribbing/pillars can be felt on the outside of the neck and a bit on the base, but not on the body of the bottle. It\'s unembossed but in very distinctive upward slanting script it reads \"Belmont\". This is done in white \"enamel\", which is fired on in a kiln after having been hand painted to order at the decorator\'s shop, which was often connected to the glass factory. It has a tooled double collar \"bar\" lip and a swirly neck. It\'s a bit under 10 3/4\" in height and 3 1/2\" in diameter.
As far as I can tell this is a very tough Nevada bottle - at least one or two are known with identical script and the same optic molding/swirl pattern, and they also have \"W. B. & S.\" initialed below, which is said to identify the proprietors of the Belmont Bar in Belmont. Those are very tough to find and command a premium at least according to the Nevada bottle book, where one of the initialed bottles is pictured. The Nevada bottle book seems to suggest it\'s a Tonopah bottle but that might have been an editing error, I\'m being told this is a Belmont bottle instead. This version without initials may not be in the same league as its initialed cousins but just try to find another :) This one came out of a Western whiskey & ephemera collection which was dispersed a few years ago, that is what I know of its provenance.
The bottle is in almost perfect condition. There\'s no damage to the glass besides some very routine scratching and scuffing across the surface of the body. The enamel writing has some slight losses primarily at the tips of the cross of the \"t\", and a crater to the hook of the \"B\", which frequently happened in thicker areas if these were fired too hot. The enamel would get a burst bubble, but in this case a previous owner has filled in the crater with paint or nail polish to make it less unsightly.
