Fine Antique American Pewter Flat Rim Plate, Scroll Mark, NATHANIEL AUSTIN, Charlestown, MA., c. 1775 - 1785. This is a nice and attractive pewter plate by an accomplished American maker who was active prior to the American revolution. This pewter plate has a scroll mark on the back that reads, \"AUSTIN\". This mark is rarer than the eagle mark. This mark was used by Nathaniel Austin during the American Revolution when his shop in Charlestown, MA. was destroyed by the British soldiers. It is believed that Nathaniel only worked in Lunenburg, MA., for several years, during the Revolution to be safe from the British army. Since England wanted the colonies to buy their pewter from England, they would close down any shops were they found pewter being manufactured in the colonies.
