Micro Beads over Coiled Basket

Description: Thisis a fantastic, beautifully hand made slip case that I have owned for more than25 years. The interior is finely woven coiled basketry in two colors. Theexterior has an all over geometric pattern in micro beads.Thefigureson the bottom of a girl, a squirrel, a tree, and a dog / cat? are from 19th centurysampler patternbooks, the script monogram on the top is done in faceted beadsand tiny seed pearls. My first guess was that it was a case for sewingimplements, and until recently I had not found another example to help determinewho made it, where or when, or what it was used for. In my last fewyears of searching I found a total of four other similar cases online inretail shops and in sales – I am including a group picture of them in thislisting for comparison.

The others were identified as 19th century cherootcases, European, Spanish, or Native American. After studying hundreds of examplesof samplers and beadwork in online museum collections, my guess is that thesecases could be from Mexico. I have added a picture in the listing of examplesof Mexican samplers (dechados) and beadwork of that period to show thesimilarities in colors, types of beads, types of patterns and pattern bookimages used. Unfortunately, although there were also very similar examples of19th century Mexican beaded wallets, purses, coin purses and cases inthe collections, I didn’t find a single one with a basketry interior likethese!

Condition: The close-up photos show the condition details well.

It is in excellentcondition – both the woven interior and the beading. The extreme close uppictures show a few cracked beads, and there is some very minor wear to the toprim of the basketry interior
