By the time of the Civil War, it became the country's most powerful financial institution - handling government payments and storing the personal finances of presidents, diplomats 🤝, and senators. It was widely known as the 'world's most important bank in the most important city'. 🗽️ Lincoln, Van Buren, Tyler, Grant, Eisenhower, and Nixon banked here - not to mention Davis, Barton, Anthony, Sherman, and MacArthur. Even the reverse of a 10-dollar bill featured its HQ in D.C.! 💰
