Rare Antique Medal - Order of the Knights of Malta - is in very good condition.Weight approximates ~ 12.2 gram. Size - 4" x 1.5".Comes with leather holder.The medal is inscribed to Sir Walter M. Weaver Friendship Comdy No.247.This piece displays rubies in the cross.The blazing star has a Latin motto in enamel surrounding the gem cross, “In Hoc Signo Vinces” meaning "In this sign thou shalt conquer". The bottom reads “Past Commander”.The Eight-Pointed Cross (now commonly known as the Maltese Cross) owes its origin to the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, Italy, the birthplace of some pious merchants who founded the first hospice in Jerusalem in 1048. The Order of the Knights Hospitalers of St John of Jerusalem was founded in Jerusalem in 1113 by Brother Gerard, a Benedictine monk. The Order which was officially approved by Pope Paschall II was formed principally to take care of the sick and provide lodgings for pilgrims visiting the holy places of Jerusalem.
