Antique 1880s Wild West Grand Jury Summons Wichita - Wm “Bill” Chenault, WW Hays:

This amazing piece of Wild West history is an 1887 legal court document signed by famous Wichita, Kansas Sheriff W.W. Hays serving well-known “sporting man” William “Bill” Chenault with a Grand Jury Summons, executed on Sept. 9, 1887.
Hays, a prominent Sedgwick County KS miller, was one of the founding fathers of Haysville, Kansas, and the town’s first postmaster. The town was named after Hays and President Rutherford B. Hayes who appointed Hays to his postmaster post in 1877.
He later served two terms as Sheriff of Wichita (1885-93) and served this summons to Chennault a “rounder” known in the Joplin, Missouri area before heading out west to the saloons of Wichita and the West.
