“Andamooka matrix opals are permeable opals and come out of the earth looking quite pasty. To obtain its beautiful color, a black body has to be created to the depth of 3-5 mm to reveal its flash from within. The first treatment requires a long soaking in a rich solution containing sugar and water. Followed by a 180-degree simmering in a bath with a resolute sulphuric acid. The sugars pierce through the limestone matrix, where the acid cooks it and turns the white sugar around the pockets of opal into black carbon. Once the opals are removed from the solution they are placed in a bicarbonate of soda to neutralize the acid. Once dry the opals are then infused with a stabilizing resin to fill the porous matrix and remove any pitting. Andamooka opal does not polish the traditional way of other opals as it will not produce a high shine. Therefore a layer of a unique liquid glass is applied to achieve a shiny surface. This process is unique to Andamooka and other porous matrix opals however they remain 100% authentic genuine opal with no synthetics. “ - Jo.
