This granite sphinx from the temple ofAmun in Kanak (Thebes) depicts Thutmose III, the sixth pharaoh of theeighteenth dynasty. What did Thutmose do to the Sphinx?He soon fellasleep and had a dream in which the Sphinx told him that if he cleared away thesand and restored it he would become the next pharaoh. After completing therestoration of the Sphinx, heplaced a carvedstone tablet, now known as the Dream Stele, between the two paws of the Sphinx.
