His feminine counterpart wasSeshat, and his wife wasMa'at.He was thegodof the moon, wisdom, writing,hieroglyphs, science, magic, art, and judgment. His Greek equivalent is Hermes .Thoth'schief temple was located in the city of HermopolisAncient Egyptian: Later known as el-Ashmunein inEgyptianArabic, the Temple ofThothwas mostly destroyed before the beginning of the Christian era. Its very large pronaos was still standing in1826,but was demolished and used as fill for the foundation of a sugar factory by the mid-19thcentury . In Hermopolis,Thothled "the Ogdoad", a pantheon of eight principaldeities, and his spouse was Nehmetawy.
