Khnum was an ancient Egyptian god with a long history of worship, dating back to the 1st dynasty (around 2925-2775 BCE) and lasting into the early centuries CE. He was associated with several important aspects of life in ancient Egypt:Khnum was a god of fertility, linked to the life-giving Nile River and its annual inundation. Egyptians believed the floods brought rich silt that fertilized the land, and so Khnum became associated with creation itself. He was depicted as a ram-headed god, and rams were seen as powerful and procreative animals. Khnum was particularly known as the "Great Potter," who fashioned human bodies and the life force (ka) on his potter's wheel. This imagery connected him to creation and the shaping of life.Closely associated with the Nile's life-giving properties, Khnum was seen as a protector of the river and its vital floods. He was especially important at Elephantine, an island near the First Cataract of the Nile.Khnum also played a role in the afterlife, sometimes depicted as a protector of the dead or as a helper to the sun god Re.Khnum's enduring popularity is reflected in the many hymns and depictions found in Egyptian temples.
