Up for sale, a very nice plaque in varnish-typefinishing Meerschaum depicting Saint Louis with the Crown of Thorns; the plaque isafter the work by Justin Mathieu (1796-1864), who created several works of artdepicting historical and religious motifs, many shown in the Paris Salons orexhibitions during his lifetime and even after his death. This work is typicalof such and of works exhibited at The Great Exhibition of 1851, sculpted inmeerschaum to satisfy the growing middle class of the time and, particularly inFrance, the interest and pride in French history. Several of his artwork was acquiredby the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; and such works can be appreciatedat that venue from time to time, as these are not exhibited permanently. King Louis IX of France (r. 1226-70), later Saint Louis, undertook two crusades to the Holy Land. He acquired relics of Christ's passion from his cousin, the Latin emperor of Constantinople Baldwin II, most notably a piece of the True Cross and also the Crown of Thorns. He brought these relics to Paris and installed them in the Sainte-Chapelle, a church that he had built to house them. According to a contemporary chronicle, on the way to Paris Louis stopped at Sens, where the Crown of Thorns was placed in the cathedral overnight. This work shows Louis at Sens with his brother and some courtiers. Clad in simple clothes, the crowned King Louis carries the extraordinary relic atop a chalice. Meerschaum is a mineral also known as sepiolite, it issometimes found floating in the Black Sea and is like marine foam. Thismaterial was widely used in the 19th century by French and Italian artists dueto the softness of the material and the relative ease of making sculptures orplaques. Meerschaum was used a lot in pipes (still in our days). The materialis very fragile and delicate. EstimatedAge: It is estimatedthat this work was made during the 19th century; the plaque has the imprintedmark of its original creator: Justin (Justin Mathieu signed his works using hisfirst name of his surname indistinctly); there is an inscription on the reverseof the plaque (which I have not managed to interpret).
Size:The size of this work is (high x length x width in inches): 9 x 13.5 x 2.Condition:This piece is in excellent condition, according to its age. Please, look at the photos (they are an essential part of the description); and if you need more, do not hesitate to request additional photos; this item is in excellent condition, there are some very minor details to note: a minor chip on the sole of the rider(please see pictures); minor rub marks on the surface, which are minimal, considering the age of this item.
