Most people recognize the name Jessica Jones from the hit Netflix series that ran for three seasons and starred Krysten Ritter. But it all started in 2001, with a comic book series called ALIAS, published under Marvel Comics\' mature readers\' imprint, Marvel MAX. Alias\'s creator was Brian Michael Bendis, and the comic introduced readers to a smart, self-destructive, booze-loving private detective with super powers and a complicated romantic life.
The comic book series saves its most powerful arcs for the end of its run with The Underneath (#16-21), The Secret Origin of Jessica Jones (#22-23) and Purple (#24-28). We see Jessica as a teenager before and after the accident that gave her super powers, beginning to learn what a hero’s life is really like, and what it costs. The same vulnerability we see in Jessica as a teenager resurfaces as an adult when she faces off against her greatest enemy--Killgrave, the Purple Man. The idea of a hero’s sacrifice is put to the test as she must overcome her past trauma to deal with Killgrave in a terrifying, emotional final arc.Alias is overall a dark story, but Bendis handles his protagonist with sympathy and respect. He roots his writing in real emotion, real people, and real-world dialogue. The Netflix series borrowed heavily from Bendis\'s plots and characterizations, and found success. Michael Gaydos was the series\' artist for the entirety of the run, and David Mack provided stylish painted covers for all 28 issues.The series ends with Jessica Jones\' announcement that she is pregnant with Luke Cage\'s baby. She and Luke had a torrid affair early in the series, but often seemed combative and generally incompatible after that. The two have an awkward conversation on the last pages of the series\' final issue that culminates in Jessica and Luke deciding to give their on-again-off-again relationship a chance. Jessica Jones has since had her baby, married Luke Cage, and played a major role in multiple Marvel comic book events such as Civil War, Secret Invasion and Dark Reign. In 2016, The Hollywood Reporter included Jessica Jones in their \"50 Favorite Female Characters\" list.
