Alex Haley (1921-1992), author of Roots and Malcolm X began working on a musical spiritual about 1965. He enlisted composer Albert Hague (1920-2001) - notably fromHow the Grinch Stole Christmas, the Broadwaymusicals Plain and Fancy,Redhead, and The Fig Leaves are Falling (with lyrics by Allan Sherman). He worked most recognizably in the film and television series, FAME, as \"Professor Shorofsky\". And some may remember his small appearance in the 1996 version of Space Jam, as the psychiatrist that players would see, when they lose their \"skill\". The musical apparently had a few working titles - one waswhich was \"President Nipzey\". Most or all of Mr. Haley\'s papers went to theUniversity of Tennessee, the state where he was born. I found one paragraph on the Library website, mentioning the show, which I\'ve included here, as supplemental information. The letters I have, are from Mr. Haley to Albert Hagueregarding the book/music early process, which looks like stalled about 1966 - at least with Mr. Hague. The content of all the letters is fascinating. These particular letters are from July 4 and July 7, 1966 about the musical, now titled \"President Nipsey\" in these letters - with progress updates. No envelopes with these. I\'m selling the letters in a few different sales, so it can be affordable to different buyers at different prices. RE:the photos shown in each sale, if there is no envelope shown, there is no envelope included. There are no rights given or implied.Thisis being sold from collector to collector. Needless to say, all of these letters extremely rare, and a great slice of history. Buyer pays $15 to ship with insurance, domestically.
