An albumen print showing the vicarage – and in the background the church tower – in the Gloucestershire village of Coln St Aldwyns.

The women in front of the vicarage are presumably the family of the incumbent. According to the Clergy List of 1866, this was the Reverend Alfred Kent. Appointed in 1853, he held his position until his death in 1895.

When the census was taken in 1861, Reverend Kent was living at the house with his wife Lucy (née Tennant) and their four children: Alice Lucy (9), Josephine (8), Aldwin Pelham (7) and Alfred Urban (3). Also present were a governess, a cook, a housemaid and a nurse.

Condition: the print presents a couple of very small, peripheral imperfections but is otherwise in excellent condition. Its tones are far more pleasant (and less green) than the scan suggest. The page on which it’s mounted is also in excellent condition.

Dimensions: the print measures 3.6” by 4.8” (9.2 cm by 12 cm); the album page measures 7” by 9.6” (17.8 cm by 24.3 cm).

All photographs are securely packaged using recycled cardboard.
