Description African American Contraband Escaped Slave Prisoners Tintype C7091RP
Photographs of contraband slaves refer to photographs taken of slaves who had escaped from slavery and sought refuge with Union forces during the American
Civil War (1861-1865). These photographs were usually taken by photographers authorized by the Union army, as well as by private individuals. These photographs were used to document the lives of these escaped slaves, and to provide visual evidence of the conditions they faced under slavery.
Photographs of contraband female slaves were also often used as propaganda to support the abolitionist movement, showing the humanity and the face of enslaved women, and the injustice of slavery. These photographs were usually posed and taken indoors,They were usually taken in the studio.
However, these photographs were not widely distributed at the time, and they were not created as part of a commercial enterprise. The taking of them did involve photographing enslaved women without their consent, and that in many cases the individuals were not compensated for their likenesses being taken. It is important to note that these photographs, while providing a valuable historical
record, do not fully capture the complexity and diversity of the their experiences  during the Civil War, and these pictures should not be seen as the roasons in the context of the time they were taken and the reasons they were made.
