Marcel Maupi fait ses premiers pas sur les scènes de music-hall de la région toulonnaise au début du xxe siècle, aux côtés de Raimu, avec qui il forme un tandem comique et à qui il devra sa carrière cinématographique, riche de près d'une centaine de films : se sentant seul à Paris au début des années 1930, le grand comédien fait venir son vieux compagnon et l'impose dans la distribution de ses films.

Maupi, qui est petit (il mesure 1,50 m) et malingre mais plein de malice et de verve provençale, s'affirme grâce aux dialogues de Marcel Pagnol (La Femme du boulanger, Le Schpountz, La Fille du puisatier). Il est dans La Femme du boulanger, Barnabé, le propriétaire du terrain aux ormeaux, qui font de l'ombre au jardin d'Antonin, et qu'il refuse de couper. Il demeure entre autres le mémorable chauffeur du « ferryboîte » de la Trilogie marseillaise, Innocent Mangiapan, qu'il crée sur scène avant de reprendre son rôle au cinéma dans deux des trois films de la trilogie, Fanny (1932) et César (1936), alors que le rôle est tenu par Zé Digiovanni dans Marius (1931).

Marcel Maupi takes his first steps on the scenes of music hall of the Toulon area at the beginning of the twentieth century, alongside Raimu, with whom he forms a comic duo and to whom he will have his film career, rich of almost a hundreds of films: feeling alone in Paris in the early 1930s, the great comedian brings his old friend and imposes in the distribution of his films.

Maupi, who is small (1,50 m tall) and malingre but full of mischief and Provençal verve, asserts himself through the dialogues of Marcel Pagnol (The Baker's Wife, The Schpountz, The Daughter of the Pummaress). He is in The Baker's Wife, Barnabas, the owner of the abalone field, which shade the garden of Antoninus, and he refuses to cut. He remains among others the memorable driver of the \"ferrybox\" of the Trilogy of Marseille, Innocent Mangiapan, he creates on stage before returning to his film role in two of the three films of the trilogy, Fanny (1932) and César (1936) , while the role is held by Ze Digiovanni in Marius (1931).
