Offered is a plate that was purportedly owned by Abraham Lincoln.
The plate exchanged hands until it was in the possession of a cousin of Lincoln, Marilla Lincoln.
This plate is $850 because the provenance, although certainly plausible, is not complete. Based on the provenance provided with the plate, it is very likely the story could be true.
Mary Todd Lincoln used $7,000 more than the government's $20,000 appropriation for redecorating the White House, and in this funding purchased the now famous Solferino pattern set. It would make sense for her to purchase additional smaller sets of china for use in the private quarters of the White House during her shopping spree in May 1861.
The documentation for this plate is in the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collections archives. Accompanying this lot are Xerox copies of the paperwork from the archives collection, and an original signed paper featured on the back of the plate.
