Early Awardof the Decoration of the Lily to Blaise Louis Deharme, Grenadier in the ParisNational Guard from 1789 through 1814, owner of a bronze foundry and workshop (andwho otherwise received a gold medal for the quality of the artefacts he had manufactured).

Artefactsby Blaise Louis Deharme are on display at the Louvre Museum and at the FontainebleauPalace (pictures attached).
Dated 18 November1814.

Issued byCharles-Philippe Count of Artois, Colonel-General of the National Guards ofFrance, brother of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, and future King of France(1824-1830). His signature on the document is actually stamped.

52 cm x 40cm.

Printed onvellum and personally signed by several personalities of high nobility, membersof the House of Peers, including on the reverse by Marshal of France NicolasOUDINOT {1767-1847), 1st Duke of Reggio. No soldier, officer orgeneral officer in the French armed forces had received more wounds thanMarshal Oudinot. He had been wounded in battle 35 times in total, to the extentthat “his body appeared to be a strainer”.

The writtentext on the reverse, added in 1816 allows Louis Deharme to wear also theDecoration of Fidelity, privilege reserved to 600 of the Parisian recipients ofthe Decoration of the Lily.

NB. Created from the onset of the French Revolution and initially placedunder the command of Marquis de Lafayette, the “Garde Nationale de Paris” was actuallya militia (members were part of the general population). They kept as muchorder as possible and in particular saved the Royal Family when a mob stormedthe Palace of Versailles on 5 October 1789. The establishment of similar units spreadaround France. As Allied troops were invading France in 1814, they foughtalongside the regular French army. After the Fall of Paris they escortedreturning members of the Royal Family as well as members of French nobility.They also maintained order. The Decoration of the Lily was created shortlyafterwards and largely awarded to members of the National Guards.

Condition: in average condition with insect damage onthe upper border and in the center of the document. Faded ink. Vertical andhorizontal folds.
