AURANIA (1924...1944)
Built by Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Ltd., Newcastle, England for the Cunard Line as a 13,984 GT ship with dimensions of 519 ft x 65 ft. Twin-screw, 15 knots, four steam turbines, two masts and one funnel.She had passenger accommodations for 500 cabin and 1,200 third. Maiden voyage was Liverpool-New York in September 1924.
Converted to armed merchant cruiser in 1939. Sold to the British Admiralty in 1942 and renamed ARTIFEX in 1944 as a repair ship.
