ASA GRAY (1826-73)HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED, “A. Gray”, one page, 8 x 5, Oct. 2. 1866, to the Librarian at the Harvard UniversityHerbarium requesting the “…transfer to me, the books now charged to Mr. H. Mann[ his assistant Horace Mann Jr.] [?] Voyage, [?] Text – 4th vl.,Atlas folio”, bytheleading American botanist of the 19thcentury whohelped organize the main generalizations of the science of plant geography.The manualof botany that carries his name is still in use today. He was afriendand confident of Charles Darwinwho became the most persistent andeffective American protagonist ofDarwin’sviews. Gray was a strong supporter but believed in atheistic evolution:he believed that religion andDarwin’stheory of natural selection could coexist. In 1838 he becamethe firstpermanent paid professor at the newly foundedUniversityofMichiganand was the firstposition solely devoted to botany at any university inAmerica.Helater accepted a position as Professor of Natural History at Harvard(1842-72).Overthe years he worked extensively on a phenomena that is now called the“AsaGray disjunction”, namely, the morphological similarities between manyEastern Asian and eastern North American plants.Gray’s work in thisarea gave significant support to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and isone of the hallmarks of Gray’s career. Gray arranged the first Americanedition ofOn the Origin of Speciesand was able tonegotiate royalties onDarwin’sbehalf.Darwinheld Grayin high esteem: he dedicated his bookForms of Flowers(1877)to Gray.Gray apparently planned to train Mann as his successor butMann died at an early age of tuberculosis.
