The “son of Waterloo” addresses this free frank to Mrs. Gurwood, the widow of cavalry officer John Gurwood
Free Frank Signed: “W” 4x2½ affixed to 8x2½ sheet. Stamed December 5, 1855. Addressed in the signer\'s hand to “Mrs. Gurwood”, née Fanny Kreilsamner, the window of John Gurwood, a valiant cavalry officer who wrote the Wellington Despatches. Arthur Richard Wellington (1807-1884) was a British soldier and politician. He was the eldest son of the 1st Duke of Wellington. His father was a former Tory Prime Minister and greatly respected military leader who gained wide repute following his victory over Napoleon at Waterloo. In 1823, Wellesley joined the British Army as an ensign, and was eventually promoted to the rank of major-general in 1854. From 1818 to 1821, he was a page of honour. He inherited the dukedom from his father in 1852, when he simultaneous took his seat in the House of Lords. Wellesley was sworn of the Privy Council and appointed master of the horse in Lord Aberdeen\'s coalition government, both in 1853. Subsequently, he joined the rest of the Palmerston government in resigning in 1858. Also in 1858, he was made a Knight of the Garter. Heavily toned.
