Antique medium-sized (approx. 1 5/16" tall with solid bale loop)Orthodox Crucifix pendant featuring ancient "budded" design of the crossbar ends with iconic image of the CrucifiedSavior (obverse) and Slavonic text of the full version of the traditional Orthodox "Save and Protect" prayer (reverse).Both sides of the pendant are decorated with floral or vine ornaments symbolizing the life-giving nature of the Christian Cross, and also referring to the preaching of Christ: "I am the vine; you are the branches" (John 15:5).The Crucifix appears to have been made from thin sheet of brass orsimilar historical copper alloy in the late 19th - early 20th centuryRussian Empire. Crosses of similar design were found in whatistoday Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Ukraine, and displayedin the Ukrainian Museum of theCross(please see the last picture for a reference).The item shows significant visiblesigns of wear and aging consistent with its age, such as reduced quality ofartwork, deformations, scratches, dents or chipped off particles of metal, andpatches of patina/oxidation.Most of the original thick patina has been removed using a complex procedure of cleaning and polishing.The size of the pendant is shown on thephotographs for this listing.
