ANTIQUE GILBERT 1930\'s (circa 1933-34) ELECTRIC 10\" OSCILLATING DESK FAN READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION!
few people even realize that a.c. gilbert electric, famed makers of \"american flyer\" toy trains & \"the erector set\" also produced electric fans, in fact, their main business was fractional horsepower electric motors. they produced electric fans under the names gilbert, icy, busy b, trailblazer, koldair, & polar cub, with production starting before 1920. from the 30\'s through the 50\'s they were the largest employer in new haven, conneticut producing fans under the polar cub name until going out of business in 1967 (6 years after the death of founder, alfred carlton gilbert, a yale educated dentist and olympic pole vaulter). in an era before air conditioning existed & during the great depression, electric fans were of great importance & an expensive luxury, with many costing as much or more than a window air conditioner does in today\'s money. this is a perfect example & with it\'s size, it\'s big enough to do the job yet, not obtrusively large. it has a knob on the back that operates a worm gear to tilt the fan head front or back and is made of all metal (primarily american steel) which is why it is still working like new at 90 years old.
this fan has been completely disassembled. the stand, blade guard, motor housings, bottom cover plate, & blades have all been blasted & powder coated, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is harder & 10 times more durable than paint) in gloss black (the blades in metallic silver). the motor was cleaned & all electrical components were tested with an ohms meter & inspectedto assure safety & proper operation. for safe, everyday use the original cord was replaced with a new thermo-insulated cord & a new \"retro\" style plug was installed. the cloth wrapped head wires (with thermo insulation under the cloth) & seven rubber grommets have all been replaced & new thermo insulated lead wires have been soldered to the switch. all components used in restoration are UL approved. all remaining components were thoroughly cleaned, polished, & clear coated as necessary, including every original screw, nut, & washer being polished and the threads cleaned. the fan was then reassembled, properly lubricated (light sewing machine oil)& test run & oscillated for a minimum of two hours to check for perfect operation. this fan is a preserved piece of machine age american history that will most likely outlive the user if properly oiled & maintained. most professional fan restorers will charge $500 to restore YOUR antique fan (not sell you a restored fan) & then they will use paint instead of powder coating (knock over a painted fan & see what happens). please look at my \"response as a seller\" column at the comments i have received on the well over 100 restored antique fans i have sold on
I RETIRED FROM RESTORING FANS SEVERAL YEARS AGO, AND AM OFFERING THIS FAN FROM MY PERSONAL COLLECTION.
