SUPER RARE ~ ANTIQUE FINE& FANCY 6 STRAND

MULTIPLECOLOR & CANDY STRIPE PATTERN HAND TWIST BRAIDED

HORSEHAIR ~FANCY KNOTS ~ OBJECTD’ ART FOLK ART REATA

WITH IMPORTANT PROVENANCE ~ 1800’s

This is a large, heavy duty, fine & fancy antique hand twistbraided, multiplecolors, multiple pattern horsehair reata (lasso) madefrom tail hair with a large 1 1/4” x 1” fancy 2 color horsehair Turk’s head endknot with fancy 2 color white horsehair on black background zig zag patternsand a 2 1/2“ long multicolored horsehair tassel at one end andtheoriginalaged, stitched leather honda at the loop end with afancy 2 color black horsehair on white background with zig zag pattern knot.Note, this is NOT a mecate that has been made into a reata, but specially madeas a heavy duty reata. Mecates are typically around 22 feet long. This reata is33” 4” long. Horsehair is much stronger than rawhide and can be made in athicker diameter. Weight is 2 lbs. 9 oz. This horsehair reata is 1/2” in diameter and made for ropingsteers and is much thicker and stronger than a typical 4 strand rawhide reatasthat can snap when roping a steer, bull or a buffalo that is akintoropinga locomotive. I have only seen 4Antique twist bradedhorsehairreatas in decades of collecting Western Americana. I have also seen less than ahandful ofAntiquehitch braidedreatas made by prisoners whohad the skill, patience and access tohorsehair, and a fewModernmadehitch braided reatas that are also hard to find and prison made. Ionce was talking to a long-time old timer at the Mesa Old West Show who wasalso a long-time rawhide braider, told him about twist braided horsehairreatas, and he said he had never seen or heard of one. This reata is thethickest diameter and longest horsehair heavy duty Antique reata I have everseen. Fancy multi-colored multi-patterned 6 strand handmade horsehair reataslike this one were much more difficult to make, requiring multiple horse tailsof different colors and a team of men to hand twist and reverse twist a6-braidlongrope (see image), was expensive to create, much harder for collectors to find,and100 timesrarer than the typical 4 strand and many times rarerthan a6-strandrawhide reatas. Rawhide reatas were crafted by asingle artisan from a single steer hide cut in a round pattern from the bellyof a steer. Modern mecates are typically made from tail hair (with someincorrectly labeled as mane hair) which is purposefully used because it isprickly to the touch and gets the attention of the horse, whileantiqueshow mecatesare made from softer, shorter, harder to find and twist braidmane horsehair. Thus, all the horsehair reatas I have ever seen are all twistbraided tail horsehair. Common tail horsehair mecates are readily apparent whennew due to the many strands of stiff horsehair that that break when the tailhair is originally twist braided (see image) when created and breaking some ofthe tail horsehair strands that make the mecate prickly for use in trainingyoung horses. Both tail horsehair and mane horsehair have some broken strandswhen new due to the twist braiding process to make them. However, Antiquehorsehair will lose most of its broken strands created when originally twistbraided from the wear of being handled as a lead rope, depending upon its ageand the amount of usage. In addition, all horsehair dries out over timedepending upon its storage conditions, i.e., hung on a barn nail vs. stored ina moisture and temperature-controlled environment, which is especiallyapplicable to antique horsehair. Even with properly stored antique horsehair, afew horsehair strands will dry out and break. Thus, any remaining horsehairbroken strands on this reata are due to naturally occurring drying out overdecades, as is present in all antique horsehair. This horsehair reata has beenlightly used and stored properly, with no damage, repairs, or alterations. Asexpected with all Antique horsehair, the suppleness has diminished with slightstiffness, yet retains much of its flexibility for its extreme age. Multiplecolor multiple candy-striped patterns, combined with extra-long length, thickness, and provenance make this a top-of-the-line example. This museumquality horsehair reata is old as dirt and remains in fine condition for itsextreme age; all original, with a nice, aged patina that comes from naturalaging and proper care. It takes decades of natural aging to turn whitehorsehair into an off-white coloration; and this coloration, unique thicknessand length helps identify the age of this reata. Compare this piece to asemi-modern Luis Ortega 4 or 6 strand braided rawhide reata, which are rare andexpensive; but are common compared to a much older Antique 1800’s 6 strandtwist braided multi-color and pattern horsehair reata.

This Antique horsehair reata would be perfect as a wall hanger, saddlehanger, or as an Object D` Art, Western, Americana, Cowboy, Vaquero, Old West,Horseman, Horse Trapping, Equestrian display, or a decorating / Folk Artconversation piece for an office, den, or Man Cave.

PROVENANCE: This super rare, extra-long, heavy duty, multi color multicandy stripe pattern horsehair reata is from the Iconic George Taylor of LosGatos, California 50-year collection of Old West items. His house looked like amuseum, and George was a well-known and beloved character and Icon in WesternAmericana as both a high-end collector and Dealer in headstalls, bridles, bits, spurs, gun leather, big time guns, rifles, Bowie Knives, gambling, and muchmore. This piece was in his collection for decades when I purchased it in the1980’s and has been in my collection since.
