This listing is for the Springfield Daily Republican for June 22, 1861. It is a Saturday edition, so it was large, with 8 pages. The normal daily had 4 pages. It is really tiny print. I am old, and I had to put on my magnifying glasses to read it, lol. It is in excellent condition - there is a lot of rag in the paper, and not a lot of acid. The reason that later papers are much more browned and fragile is that later on in the Victorian era publishers realized that they could make paper much cheaper by using less rag and adding acid. No one, at the time, cared if the papers lasted or not. There is a huge amount of Civil War information, including the Kansas volunteers, blockades, Harpers Ferry, and much, much more.This edition is almost completely devoted to discussions of the War - preparations in New England, discussions of the South, troop movements, as well as discussions of the merits of the Generals. If you are interested in the Civil War, this is a great paper, as it\'s very immediate; it\'s as it was happening on that day - June 1861. The people writing and reading this newspaper had no knowledge of what was to come, and how it would affect our lives even to this century.
