PROVENANCE:

This plate is a part of a very rare, hard to find in any condition antique Montpellier set that also has remarkable provenance. It came from Katharine Meyer-Graham Martha\'s Vineyard Estate. Yes, -Katharine Meyer-Graham who led the Washington Post Co. and was portrayed by Meryl Strip in the movie \"The Post\". Katharine Meyer-Graham inherited this set from her parents,- Eugene Meyer and Agnes Meyer. Her father was a serious collector of Oriental and Southern France Art. They all were quite prolific and famous people. A lot of information on them is available pretty much everywhere you go. This family hosted magnificent parties at their estates, entertaining rich and famous among whom were Eleanor Roosevelt, Robert and Jaqueline Kennedy, Ronald and Nancy Reagan just to name a few. We have been told that there is a good possibility that anyone of them could be served with this particular set. Such interesting provenance makes this set even more unique, collectible and desirable on the top of being old, hard to find and rare Montpellier faience in yellow color was introduced in 1770 in Southern France. Every piece was hand crafted and hand painted. Faience is very fragile since it\'s made by coating low fired body with a tin glaze. Most of it, if not all, is broke and lost by now. The remaining pieces available on the market, including these we listed, all have small chips. That\'s why it\'s offered in as is condition, that is rather good, considering it\'s age and material it was made of. With provenance of this set mentioned above this is truly magnificent and remarkable collectible or kitchen-restaurant conversation piece decor. Please, examine all the close up pictures we provided for your buying consideration. You are welcome to ask any questions prior buying or offerding. We can ship it anywhere within continental U.S. for a flat rate of 13.90$. It includes shipping, insurance, delivery confirmation and packaging material.

MONTPELLIER faience, French tin-glazed earthenware made at factories in the city of Montpellier, France, from the end of the 16th century into the 19th century. Its heyday was between 1570 and 1750. Much of the output consisted of drug jars (Montpellier was one of the oldest medical schools in Europe), but its wares from the beginning showed a certain individuality. Among the better decorations were much-copied naturalistic bouquets on a white or yellow background, instead of the traditional stylized flower arrangements.

Faience, first emerged in France during the sixteenth century, reaching widespread usage among elite patrons during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, prior to the establishment of soft-paste porcelain factories. Although characterized as more provincial in style than porcelain, French faience was used at the court of Louis XIV as part of elaborate meals and displays, with large-scale vessels incorporated into the Baroque garden designs of Versailles. Earlier examples of French faience attest to the strong influence of maiolica artists from Italy. Later works demonstrate the ways in which cities such as Nevers, Rouen, Lyon, Moustiers, and Marseille developed innovative vessel shapes and decorative motifs prized among collectors throughout Europe.

While faience can be created from a wide mixture of clays, it is foremost distinguished by the milky opaque white color achieved by the addition of tin oxide to the glaze. French faience is typically divided into two types. Grand feu (high fire) describes pieces that have been decorated with glaze and metallic oxides before being fired a single time at a high temperature of around 1650°F (900°C). Petit feu (low-fire) faience, developed in the second half of the eighteenth century, refers to a process whereby the clay body is fired before being glazed and decorated with metallic oxides and then fired again at a lower temperature; pieces can also go through a third firing. Grand feu pieces have a more limited color palette that consists of blue, yellow, brown-purple, and green. By contrast, the lower firing temperature of petit feu faience enabled both greater precision in painting techniques and variety in the range of INFO:
