THE WATCH INSCRIPTION:

The inner case back is inscribed

\'Presented by the Duke of Wellington to Sam\'L Phillips Jan 21st 1820\'.

After much in-depthresearch, I have found that Samuel Phillips was the Duke of Wellingtons butler at his residence at Stratsfield Saye. Samuel Lived and worked there and brought his family up there. He was a recognised champion Tennis player and played in against his French counterparts. I would think that this was a treasured gift from the Duke to Samueleither for his continued service or it may be tennis related.

Samuel Phillips:(1797 – 21 May 1858)

Samuel was born in Cambridge and married Sarah Tall on 4 August1818. He and Sarah had at least six children: Charles Samuel (1821-1883), Rev.Samuel John (1822-1890), Sarah (1827-), John (1829-), Emma Tall (1831-) andHarriet (1838-). Samuel was butler to the Duke of Wellington and worked atStratfield Saye House, Hampshire for the majority of his life, where he and hisfamily lived at the Butler’s House on the estate. They were still at StratfieldSaye in 1851, but are thought to have retired to Cambridge to live with eldestson Charles. Sons Charles and John both lived in Cambridge and were both‘tennis masters’. Charles Phillips lived at East Road and was said to be atennis court owner. Samuel Phillips died at East Road and the funeral was heldon 25 May 1858. His probate records described him as a ‘tennis master’ ratherthan a butler.

THE WATCH:

This incredible solid silver mans hunter pocket watch is in good condition considering its age. It winds and ticks which is probably not as important as its historical importance.

CASE:

This superb 3 piece full hunter watch case is made from solid English hallmarked silver. Although the marks are rubbed in one part of the case the marks on both cases date the watch to 1819. The case is in good condition showing minor dings here and there to both front and back covers. The case measures 5.0cms (50mm) in diameter.

DIAL:

This beautiful watch has a bright white enamel dial which is showing some hairlines. It is however in good condition for its age. It has black painted Arabic numerals which are in excellent condition. The dial has two steel hands which have some bends in places. The dial has a key hole in the front for winding.

MOVEMENT:

This lovely watch has a beautiful VERGE FUSEE movement with a nice diamond endstone. It is fully signed and the the movement is marked \'Des Granges late Recordon\' London. (Peter DesGranges, Cockspur St, Charing Cross, successor to Louis Recordon, who was himself successor to Josiah Emery). It is numbered 9012. The movement winds and actually runs and ticks which is rare for watches of this age. It has not been checked for timekeeping.

THIS IS A UNIQUE ITEM AND SHOULD REALLY BE IN A MUSEUM. HOWEVER YOU CAN OWN IT AND IN TURN HAVE YOUR OWN PIECE OF BRITISH HISTORY.

Please remember that vintage watches have survived for many decades by being treated well. Vintage watches are not for wearing while doing yard work, working out, or swimming. Vintage watches cannot keep time like their quartz cousins and will need altering on average between +-2 to +-5 mins per day. They are a little more destructible than modern watches. Vintage watches also require periodic service and cleaning. Every couple of years, they would like their 20,000 mile checkup, oil change, and general service. By taking care of your vintage watch, you will have years of great service, and a quality heirloom to pass to another generation.

MY POSTAGE CHARGES ARE FIXED-DO NOT TRY TO NEGOTIATE AFTER THE END OF THE sale.
