The is an antique Japanese Edo era (c. 1750) hand held candle stand. It made with all hand forged iron and could use either a candle or a dish ( see pictures 15, 16, & 17 - not included) to hold whale oil. Using a candle with a hole in its base allowed it to fit over the central spike (see picture 13) and become steady and nearly earthquake proof. Measures 10" long (25cm) by 6" tall (15 cm) with a central dish 5" in diameter (12.5 cm). Aside from having a few bends in the dish (see picutres) is is overall in good condition . Old world craftsmanship for the new world craftsman! Built samurai tough of samurai forged iron to last generations!
