Here we have a fantastic, rare and interesting piece; a Dao Sword and wooden scabbard from Northeastern India dating from the late 19th century. Adding to the glory of this piece, there is attached to the rattan belt hoop, an amulet of a tiger or leopard mandible, conceived to thereby bring good and safe hunting and conffering protection upon its possessor. The sword is 24" long, with a chisel-edge blade, hand forged of course, thicker towards the haft-end, but tapering down as the blade widens towards the far end. The handle is made of wood, with some very nice basketry work on the grip. I suspect the original owner used pitch tar to patch over some of the basketry damage and thereby extending its use. The scabbard is 26" long, open on one side, with beautiful recessed areas cut into the wood on both sides, for design reasons, and of course to accommodate the blade. Originally there would have been some nice woven basketry work to hold the blade into the custom blade-recessed area. Sadly this is no longer here. Likewise, the beautiful rattan belt hoop would have once also been attached to the scabbard, (hoop = 21" long, and the mandible is 3 1/2" long, canine = 1 3/8"!!). These details of loss could easily be rectified. A breathtaking piece here, with so many historical and fascinating details.
