This little piece is a framed small icon statue, in a shadow frame. It is antique - late 1800's. It was purchased, according to the previous owner in an antique market in Valbonne, France. The antique tiny statue is the Madonna holding the Christ Child, with an embossed, decorated paper mat under old glass. The little figure is made from carved Meerschaum (like the pipes), and has much better detail than my photos show. Frame appears to be heavy cardboard covered in black paper. Original hanger on back has been replaced. The new hanger is also old, but not as old as the piece - the hanger dates to the 1930's, while the picture is late 1800's. I have some of the same hangers like this one as well, in gray, that came in an original 1930's packet, so I am sure of the date of the hanger. I was told, by the previous owner that it was Nun's work, from a convent in France. It is just beautiful, and won't disappoint.
