Please email with any questions. 8 1/4" by 5 1/4" lined ecru paper dated March 10, 1862. Letter sent to Carhart & Curd, hardware merchants in Macon, Georgia with many customers along the railroad lines of the state. Letter from Tristan Waters (1815-1889 ) of Lanier in Macon County. Waters writes in part: You asked me for money but I tell you sir it is impossible for me to send you any money now for I don't get any. There is no money in the Country. I should like to pay you all I owe you but it is impossible for me to do so now.". I imagine that his plight was not uncommon during the war. Some wear and loss to the paper, soiling slight on the front, heavy on the back. The "Lost Town of Lanier" was the first county seat of Macon County in 1838 located on the main stage line between Tazewell & Columbus, six miles north of Oglethorpe. The Central of Georgia Railroad extended its tracks to Oglethorpe and by 1870 nothing was left to mark the business center of Lanier.
