Please email with any questions. 8x8 light blue paper dated August 1859, sent to hardware merchants in Macon, Georgia by Samuel & J B Murphy in Snapping Shoals, Georgia. Letter reads: Gentlemen- Enclosed you will please find the right hand half of the ten dollar bill we sent you the left hand end of some time ago. We have not received the goods yet but suppose they are at Covington by this time. We received the bill last Friday if there is any fraction in our favour you can just enter it to our credit on the next bill we send another bill by Mr Odell.
Water power, fertile land and excellent fishing were major attractions. Early settlers built a sawmill, grist mill and other small industries. The town developed on both sides of the river and flourished in the 1900´s A post office of Snapping Shoals was established on the Newton County side of the river from 1850 to 1902 and the community there had a reported population of 200.
