Any study of the military dress and equipment of the Civil War must necessarily include the ten years prior to the conflict, since it was in those years that the basic styles evolved, as well as the several years following the war, when the vast stocks of clothing and accouterments on hand were still being worn. Yet the period 1851-1872 has a validity all its own and witnessed trends in dress and armament quite distinct from the years on either side; its terminal dates are important signposts in the history of American military uniform, arms, and equipment—far more so than the beginning and end of the Civil War itself.
