We are offering a mortgage deed for property in the state of Illinois, with original date of November 1st, 1832, and subsequent dates of May 31st, 1834, May 13th, 1837, and June 20, 1848 as the property changed hands. The deed gives the names of numerous people as the owners of the property including Robert A. Hallam of New London, Connecticut, Trustee for the Foreign and Domestic Episcopal Missionary Society of the United States; Susan Griffing of the City of Washington in the District of Columbia; Henry D. Huntington and wife Sarah H. Huntington of Cincinnati, Ohio; and it also names The American Bible Society in the City of New York.**NOTE** - the deed is very long, containing a lot of information, way more than we can possibly mention here. We will give a brief description of the property and try to mention as many of the names as we can.
The property is described as "Tracts of parcels or lots of land situated in Wabash, Cook County, State of Illinois donated by the Congress of the United States for the purpose of aiding the state in opening a canal to connect the Waters of Lake Michigan with those of the Illinois River...... All the above described premises on the 13th day of 1837 were mortgaged by William W. Lattendale ?? [not sure of the name] of Chicago to Edward Hattan........"Some of the other names mentioned are Elizabeth H. Chew of Brooklyn, NY; Mr. R. Swift and Abby H. Swift, wife, of New York City; George R. Lewis and May H. Lewis, wife, of New London, Connecticut; Lucy C. Chew of Brooklyn. Affixed to the deed is the American Bible Society embossed seal with "American Bible Instituted 1816" printed on it; and printed on the open pages of the bible is "Search Thy Scriptures". **CONDITION**- Very Good condition for its age; it has split at a couple of the folds (see images)
