Galtür

is a municipality in the Landeck district, Tyrol (Austria). Due to its location in the Alps, the main industry is tourism.

Population: 771 (January 1, 2017)

Area: 121.2 km²

Altitude: 1584 m

Galtür is located in the rear of Paznaun in a valley widening between the Silvretta in the south and the Verwall group in the north, on the border with Vorarlberg. Around 1300, the area was settled by Walser immigrants who were welcomed by the Romansh landlords. Story

The Romansh, Alemannic and Bavarian-Tyrolean cultures overlap in Galtür. It was settled by the Engadin people from the south, the Walser and Vorarlberger people from the west and by Tyrolean people from the east.

The Romanesque settlers, who occupied the alpine pastures around the then swampy valley floor at the confluence of the Vermunt and Jambach streams, had interest obligations (cheese interest) to landlords in the Lower Engadine and Vinschgau since 1095, which lasted for over 700 years. The cultivation work of the Engadin people is still remembered today with the name Galtür (Cultura). There was a close connection with the Engadine. In some cases, mule tracks and cart paths were created over the Silvretta passes at an altitude of 2500 m to 2800 m, which bear witness to lively trade traffic.

Around 1300, Walser immigrants from the Montafon immigrated, who were welcome by the Rhaeto-Roman landowners.
