Detailed information:

Galtür

Galtür is located in the rear of Paznaun in a valley widening between the Silvretta in the south and the Verwall group in the north, on the border with Vorarlberg. Around 1300, the area was settled by Walser immigrants who were welcomed by the Romansh landlords. From the middle of the 20th In the 19th century, the community developed from an agricultural community to a tourism community with a focus on winter tourism.

The (toll) Silvretta High Alpine Road was opened in 1953 and connects the Paznauntal with the Montafon in Vorarlberg.

Story

The Romansh, Alemannic and Bavarian-Tyrolean cultures overlap in Galtür. It was settled by the Engadin people from the south, the Walser and Vorarlberger people from the west and by Tyrolean people from the east.

The Romanesque settlers, who occupied the alpine pastures around the then swampy valley floor at the confluence of the Vermunt and Jambach streams, had interest obligations (cheese interest) to landlords in the Lower Engadine and Vinschgau since 1095, which lasted for over 700 years. The cultivation work of the Engadin people is still remembered today with the name Galtür (Cultura). There was a close connection with the Engadine. In some cases, mule tracks and cart paths were created over the Silvretta passes at an altitude of 2500 m to 2800 m, which bear witness to lively trade traffic.

Around 1300, Walser immigrants from the Montafon immigrated, who were welcome by the Rhaeto-Roman landowners. Still in the 19th century In the 19th century, the Churraetian-Federal, Walserian and Upper Tyrolean influences are said to have been evident in the way the locals spoke and their physiognomy.

Galtür was plundered during the Thirty Years\' War. The church and many houses went up in flames. The village took a long time to recover from this damage, and the accumulated tax debts were only forgiven in 1645.

In the 18th centuryIn the 19th century, Galtür was made into a well-known place of pilgrimage by “far-sighted” pastors. Between 1776 and 1778, with the help of private donations, the church was redesigned into the Baroque building that still exists today.A “soul society” founded in 1722, which still exists today, made a significant contribution to this.

The first roads leading through Paznaun were built in the 19th century. Built in the century. As a result, Galtür was discovered by many travelers. At that time, Galtür still consisted of a church, an inn and 7 to 8 huts and could be described as very poor. With the new connection, cheap food became available, prices fell and the mountain farmers became further impoverished. At times the ancient paths and high passes were used as smugglers\' paths to ensure survival.

Things were looking up again for the mountaineers who were enthusiastic about the Silvretta. The construction of the Jamtalhütte was soon followed by the first hotel. With the tourists came life and prosperity to the valley again. From the middle of the 20th In the 19th century, the community developed from an agricultural community to a tourism community with a focus on winter tourism.

Paznaun has always been at high risk of avalanches.

Avalanche 23. February 1999

On the 23rdIn February 1999, Galtür was hit by an avalanche that claimed 31 lives.

Due to heavy snowfall, the place was cut off from the outside world in February 1999; relief teams from the mountain rescue, the Red Cross and the Federal Army could only be flown in by helicopter. Since the Austrian armed forces did not have sufficient capacity, the Austrian federal government requested international support. Helicopters from the USA, Germany, Switzerland and France were involved in the evacuations and transport flights over the following days.

In addition to several helicopters of the type Agusta Bell (AB) 204 and 212, as well as Alouette III of the Austrian Armed Forces, Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk of the US Army, Sikorsky CH-53 G of the German Bundeswehr and also Aérospatiale Super Puma of the French Armed Forces, the German Federal Border Guard and the Swiss Air Force.

Effects of the avalanche accident

Torrent and avalanche control projects in Galtür

Approximately 120 million schillings (Euro 8.7 million) were invested in Galtür\'s avalanche safety. The following financing key was agreed:

Federal (69%)

Country (22%)

Federal Highway Administration (4%)

Municipality (5%)

The avalanche of the 23rd February 1999 reached unimaginable proportions. Against all expectations, the avalanche penetrated into the green zone (considered safe). The amount of snow that fell in February 1999 was six times higher than the average and 40% higher than the maximum value measured up to that point.
