BIRDS OF A FEATHER: AIR AMERICA: \"Birds of a Feather\" looks at the unique \"civilian\" airline known as \"Air America\" – secretly owned and operated by the American CIA. Air America employed more than 300 pilots, copilots, flight mechanics and airfreight specialists. Their aircraft included both fixed wing planes as well as helicopters which flew many types of cargo to countries such as Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. The crews of Air America have been called \"the secret soldiers of the cold war\" who were willing to fly \"Anything, Anytime, Anywhere, Professionally.\" For more than a decade these pilots conducted covert operations for the CIA under the guise of a commercial airline. Most of the men were lured to the unusual company simply by the promise for adventure and regularly wound up flying under extremely hazardous conditions. Despite the extreme danger, Air America crews became renowned for performing some of the most dangerous missions in all of southeast Asia. Many pilots risked everything to recover downed airmen or to evacuate wounded troops from positions that were on the verge of being overrun. Technically, U.S. military personnel weren\'t supposed to be stationed in Laos under terms of an international agreement. But working under the guise of a civil airline, Air America crews provided a wide arrangement of clandestine support to the agency in what would become one of the largest paramilitary operations in U.S. history. American Air Commandos stood ready to strike at a moment\'s notice around the globe.
