Good morning all. Here is an assembled set of 8 vintage Stanley USA No. 60 chisels - 1/4\" 3/8\" 1/2\" 3/4\" 1\" 1-1/4\" 1-1/2\" 2\". These are the real legit No. 60s, with the \"Stanloid\" handles and the stout strike buttons.
These chisels represent 25 years of finding No. 60s and constantly swapping out for the best ones. Having said that, most of these chisels had working lives. No. 60 chisels were tools made to take abuse, and most often they did.
So, from widest to narrowest:
1. I think that the 2\" chisel has the original factory bevel. If it ever saw any use, it was very light, as there are no hammer marks on the strike button, which still has the original factory sticker. Hone and go.2. The 1-1/2\" chisel is also in very good condition, with what I believe is the original factory bevel. There is a small spot on the edge that you can see in the 4th and 5th (highly enlarged) pictures. That will eventually hone out. Unless you are planning on using this chisel to pare exposed joints in fine furniture, it is pretty much irrelevant to use. Hone and go.3. The 1-1/4\" chisel has the darkening of the metal that you see in the pictures. It has been re-sharpened by some method whereby the bevel was cut parallel with the edge, but I have to say that it is extremely sharp.4. I would say that the 1\" chisel had the bevel hollow ground at some point in its life, but it is in very good condition. Hone and go.5. I just reground the bevels on the 3/4\" - 1/4\" chisels on the Tormek (you are welcome). Lightest hone and go.
