Set of 7 1914 Postcards, Renee to Gaston as World War I breaks out French Postcards RPPC
This is a set of 7 postcards, mailed in 1914 from Renee in Chenac, France to her dear Gaston. At the beginning there is no mention of the War. Later in the year, we see the War creep into her concern for him, mention of wounded friends and of her work with the wounded.
Dates of cards are:January 28, 1914March 18, 1914 (canceled stamp)May 19, 1914 (canceled stamp)July 16, 1914August 19, 1914September 10, 1914 (a bit of surface wear to woman's face)September 16, 1914
Renee is a faithful and loving correspondent who clearly misses Gaston. I do not know the outcome of their romance or whether either or both lived through the long and terrible war.
All of the postcards are in nice shape. All are tinted. All feature beautiful women. All have some edge wear and light surface scratching. All are curved slightly from storage.
Some cards have a line of Renee's sentiments written on the photo side. Some have canceled stamps and some do not. I do not understand how these were delivered without an address unless carried personally or some other means I do not know about.
My mother was a photographer who collected antique photos of all types for years. As I am settling her estate, I will be listing these photos as quickly as I am able.There are hundreds of photos to go through, and I am trying to match any information my mother may have left with individual photos. Unfortunately, Mom had dementia at the end of her life and wasn't able to tell me much about her collection. She had done a lot of research into photographers and individual pieces in her collection, and often, but not always, filed her research with the photo(s). I search for more information on the internet and in history books, but it's a slow process and it will take me a long time to complete the sorting and selling process.I am always happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases, so please check out my other listings.
