The five collections of dice from Ricky Jay's collection of magical ephemera, cards, dice, and entertainment memorabilia.

Ricky Jay asked his friend Rosamond Purcell to photograph and commemorate his crumbling collection of dice. The result is a series of remarkable photographs that inspired Mr. Jay's composition on decomposing dice. These dice made from celluloid, the first commercially manufactured plastic, remain stable for decades, and then in a flash begin to crack, crys-tallize, and implode. Jay waxes on about the history of dice and the forces that destroy them. He traces gambling with dice from the ancient use of astragali, the heel bones of hoofed quadrupeds, to their use in the casinos of Las Vegas. Along the way we discover numerous ways in which shaved, misspotted, and loaded dice were used by colorful and unscrupulous hustlers to gain advantage over their less enlightened brethren. We learn that Augustus, Caligula, and Nero were all inveterate players, and that Queen Elizabeth issued an edict against the manufacture of false dice in 1598. We meet a colorful assortment of gamesters, scammers, and even armless dicers.

All the while we see Rosamond Purcell's luminous and seductive photographs, images that transform entropy into an art form, and occasionally reveal the secret of the cheater's advan-tage. What Jay and Purcell give us is a dual meditation on dice that will educate us and amuse us at the same time. Even those who have never considered craps will find their collaboration irresistible.

    About the author:

Ricky Jay was born Richard Jay Potash in Brooklyn, New York in 1948.

He first performed magic in public at the age of 4. At the age of 7, he appeared on a TV show called Time for Pets, plopping a guinea pig into a top hat and appearing to turn it into a chicken. He left home as a teenager and worked at Lake George and at the Electric Circus. He appeared in about 40 movies and television shows including House of Games, The Spanish Prisoner, Redbelt, State and Main, Tomorrow Never Dies, Boogie Nights, and Deadwood. In the 1990s, he and Michael Weber founded the consulting firm Deceptive Practices. Their film-industry projects included a wheelchair that made Gary Sinise's Vietnam War-veteran character in Forrest Gump appear to be a double amputee.

Jay wrote several books including Cards as Weapons, Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women, Celebrations of Curious Characters, and Matthias Buchinger: The Greatest German Living. He died on November 24, 2018 at the age of 70.

    Rest in Peace.
