He came to the United States at the age of three. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to New York City working in the layout and advertising departments of publishers.
In 1955, armed with his Rolleiflex camera, Guyther turned his attention to the male figure and decided to name his studio Vulcan, after the god of fire. His work immediately became a staple of the Weider publications Adonis, Body Beautiful and The Young Physique . Mail orders for prints began pouring in. "Sometimes, there would be $200 or $300 a week," he told me in an interview, "and that was considerable money in those days." Guyther's work became widely regarded for its simplicity and elegance. It had the look of fashion photography, with a sexy sense of restraint that was less about muscle and more about youthful yearning.Publisher H. Lynn Womack, whose stable of physique magazines included the stalwarts Trim, Fizeek, Manorama, MANual and Grecian Guild Pictorial , wrote of Vulcan in a 1962 letter to another physique photographer, "Other photographers dislike [Vulcan] because he is well educated. He is a gentleman. He is the best photographer in the business. He cares nothing for other photographers. He has made a fortune in physique photography. He still has the fortune he has made. He is, at 40, completely independent of everyone."Despite his independence, like other physique photographers of his era Guyther was harassed by postal police and local authorities. "Once when the police came by and looked around, they didn't find any nudes, but they did see the work I was doing," "One of the officers, who clearly was gay, came up to me as the others were walking out and whispered,
'You do beautiful work.'
