All of the Thailand specimens are from the Darryl Futrell Collections of Tektites. Specimens with catalog numbers beginning with the letters “FIT” are hand numbered specimens from his collection.
Slashform tektites are formed when the molten and vaporous rock from a huge asteroid impact is blasted up to nearly outer space where it cools into blobs of hot glass. As the hot soft glass falls back down to Earth it is shaped by the atmosphere and the spin of the blobs into unique and fascinating forms. These aerodynamically shaped tektites are only found in a handful of places on the Earth and each tektite is unique. The commonly found forms include dumbells, teardrops, patties, ovals and spheres, as well as portions of hollow bubbles of glass.The Thailand splashform tektites are nearly 800,000 years old and part of the Indochinite tektite family.
