4 letters and 1 envelope.Letters talk about marching to the Rhine, wonderful reception as they move through French towns, waiting in Luxembourg for Germans to evacuate, being a skeleton when leaving the lines - lost 25 lbs, living n the open day in and out etcNov 23 1918 . . . Marching everyday in the direction of the Rhine . . . Shot I’m making to get mail thru . . . We have had the most wonderful reception in these liberated towns in France . . Our regiment is leading and at the head of the column the regimental band marches . . . We people go wild from joy . . .
Nov 25 1918 . . .we are still in Luxembourg waiting orders to move on . . .extended halt is to give the Germans a little more time for evacuating . . I was a skeleton when I can out of line a month ago . . . Full of cold, gas and everything else . . . I had lost 25 pounds . . . I thought several times of going to the hospital . . Made up my mind to stick it out . . . Living out in the open day in and day out . . Now on we will always have billets . . . I’ll tell you something in detail of our last fighting - in general we were in the line northwest of Verdun and north of Montfaire on our right flank resting on the Meuse River . . Days are getting short . . .
Jan 7 1919 . . . Same old routine each day . . Christmas box came today . . . These Germans don’t know what gum is . . Haven’t any mail for a week . . A souvenir in the shape of a small piece of shrapnel which missed me by a fraction of an inch. If it had hit me I wouldn’t be here to tell the tale . .
March 1 1919 . . . Hopes of setting foot on U.S. soil by the 1st of April . . . Orders . . Start moving to St Nazaire . . , scheduled to follow the 118th Infantry . . . No idea where we will land in the U.S. . . . Hope everyone has gotten rid of the Flu . . . By myself tonight . . My buddy Capt Booth has gone down to Tours to look after some baggage . . He and I have a tent together in Camp here and have fought the battle of the “Marne, St Mihiel, and the Meuse-Argonne over so many times I have lost count . . .
