WOODEN SHOE LASTS

3 sizes: Baby - Youngster - Older Child

Utilitarian items like this are among the most collectible as they show real human touch and use. These have been together since the Fifties, decorative display on a shelf, representing 3 children who were 2-3 years apart!

So listing together to move them forward to new life. We are leaving patina exactly as they were found and have been as long as we can remember. You can see worn spots, discoloration, and little gouges where the craftsman’s handiwork was strongest.

Lasts are the forms shoemakers use to create a shoe or boot. In previous centuries, all shoes were made by hand. Today, lasts like these would be used for custom-made shoes. The term “last” finds its etymological roots in the Old English word “laest,” which translates to “footprint” — makes sense!

A. The largest has a date of 1961.. but we think it is older and just handed down and reused by later shoemakers. An older child’s shoe form: with metal plates on the bottom and metal top with ferrule for the shoemaker to place in a stand and hammer the soles of the shoes. Has size 3D stenciled on and stamped on the toe

B. The middle one is the oldest, we believe it to be 18th century, into early 19th. For a small child\'s foot.Carved of one wooden block, you can see a ferrule was added later, thus the cause of the old crack. Still solid and intact

C. Baby shoe form, so sweet! This one is 19th century for sure, it has features that brought about more mechanized shoe last reflecting the industrial revolution… yet shoes were still made by hand! It has B 7 stenciled on the side

Continue use as decorative items or perhaps there is a custom shoe maker or cordiner / cordwainerout there-- or perhaps a leather crafter ready to try making footwear!! -- who can put these back to use!! Antique specialists will tell you to leave the patina as it is, but a good restorationist or conservationist will be able to clean them up a little if wanted.
