This beautifully rare and very large 20\" X 16\" Chinese Moon Flask is an exquisite piece of art showcasing the craftsmanship and cultural heritage of China. Birds of prey like hawks and eagles were depicted in Chinese art as military heroes or to pay homage to the Emperor. Moon flasks, like this one, often were displayed in an imperial palace, a nobleman\'s home, or a military hero of great importance.

Moon Flask Highlights:

This moon flask is probably from the Chinese Quing Dynasty or early to mid-20th century. It is in like new condition.

It is comprised of fine porcelain with a clear underglaze over the entire flask. All of the artwork is above the clear glaze on the moon flask. The two handles at the upper portion of the moon flask are yellow gold gilt with a unique design. The gold gilt is throughout the moon flask amongst blue Lotus flowers in a motif design. The top of the flask has a yellow gold ribbon of approximately 1/8 inch in width.

The front of the moon flask:

A majestic hawk or eagle is standing on a tree branch surrounded by white blossoms with yellow relief anthers. A blanket of white snow rests on the branches.

The hawk or eagle is approximately 8 inches tall and 8 inches wide. His red and black beak and white body are highlighted with feathers of varying shades of white and beige. His wings are folded while his eye appears to be staring at you. His sharp dark claws rest steady on the snowy branch and lead up to his golden feet.

Black and red Chinese chop marks are to the left of this large hawk or eagle. A red Chinese chop mark is to the right of the hawk or eagle.

The back of the moon flask:

The Chinese province, age, artist marks, and artist signature are shown on the back of the moon flask to the left of a long Chinese calligraphy poem.

More than likely, the artist of this flask inscribed a renowned and famous Chinese poem that is symbolic to the hawk or eagle. The bird\'s symbolism could be about power and wealth or paying homage to an emperor, a person, or a Chinese dynasty of importance.
